Robert R.” Sambo” Sambataro, 79, of Sandown, N.H., formerly of Lawrence passed away Wednesday, July 08, 2009 at the Lawrence General Hospital. He was born in Lawrence and was the son of the late James D. “Mate” and Josephine (Giglio) Sambataro.
Robert was raised and educated in Lawrence and was a graduate of Lawrence High School, class of 1948. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Missouri during the Korean War. After the war he joined the Lawrence Fire Department where he worked for over 25 years. He served on Engines 4 & 9.
After his retirement from the fire department he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves where he served as a Chief Petty Officer. He was a member of the Lawrence Masonic Temple and loved gardening, reading, the beach, playing the piano, cooking and making his own wine and sausages.
He is survived by his sons, James S. Sambataro and his wife Lauren of Salem, N.H. and Richard R. Sambataro and his wife Jodi of Sandown, N.H.; daughters, Joanne G. Troy and her husband Thomas of Windham, N.H. and Gina M. Sambataro of Haverhill; 9 grandchildren, Anthony, David, Joseph, Richard, Katie, Chris, Courtney, Robert and Kylie; his former wife, Angela (Cristaldi) Sambataro – Nagy of Methuen; great aunt, Mary Ruffino of Salem, N.H. and a cousin, Grace Stromei of Methuen.
ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends may call on Friday, July 10, 2009 from 4 – 8 PM at the Cataudella Funeral Home 126 Pleasant Valley St. Methuen. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Corpus Christi Parish at Holy Rosary Church, Lawrence. Interment will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence.
