METHUEN — Retired Lawrence Firefighter, Capt. Kevin J. Ord Sr., 52, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, at his home.
Born in Lawrence, Kevin was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1971, and the University of Lowell, with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1978. He also attended Boston State College for fire science.
Kevin served his country in the U.S. Navy, prior to being honorably discharged in 1976.
Kevin was a former attendant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church before its closing and was an attendant of St. Patrick's Church.
He began a long and distinguished career with the Lawrence Fire Department in 1976, when he was assigned as firefighter with the EMT division. In 1985, he was promoted to lieutenant commander of the Arson Division until 1989. He was then promoted to the rank of captain, as commander of the Fire Prevention Division until 1992. From 1990 to 2002, Kevin was also a fire investigator for Phoenix Investigations in Rehoboth and Gallagher Mahoney and Associates in Scituite.
He was a member of the International Association of Firefighters, local 146, and past vice president and secretary, Massachusetts Chapter, International Association of Arson Investigators, the Massachusetts Fire Prevention Association, Lawrence Firefighters Association, director from 1979 to the present and treasurer from 1979 to 1986 the Lawrence Firefighters Municipal Credit Union, director from 1997 to present, and treasurer from 2000 to present.
Capt. Ord was a member of Lawrence Elks Lodge 65, and the VFW Post 2104, North Andover. In 1992, he was Lawrence Firefighter of the Year. Kevin was a founding member of Relief's Inn and the Sour Grapes Retirement Club.
A 28-year resident of Methuen, he is survived by his wife of 29 years, Karen E. (Messer) Ord; son, Kevin J. Jr.; daughters, Kristine M. and Kathryn L. Ord, all of Methuen; father, John D. Ord of Lawrence; brothers, Barry S. and wife Francine of Lawrence, John D. Ord, also of Lawrence and Richard A. and wife Denise Ord of Methuen; father and mother-in-law, Frank H. Messer Jr. and Pauline M. (Charest) Messer; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also leaves his friend and dog, Maggie.
Kevin was the son of the late Mary L. (Leonard) Ord
ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Pollard Funeral Home Inc., 233 Lawrence St., Methuen. A funeral Mass will take place on Saturday at noon in St. Patrick's Church, South Lawrence with interment to follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Methuen. Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer MGT Trust, c/o Caritas Holy Family Hospital, 70 East St., Methuen, MA 01844 and Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Building 9, Lawrence, MA 01843.
Friday October 13, 2006 The corner of Park & Willow Streets in Lawrence will be dedicated in his name.
