LAWRENCE — Edward J. Murphy Sr., 84, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005, at Caritas Holy Family Hospital in Methuen. Born and educated in Lawrence, where he was a lifelong resident, he attended St. Patrick's Grammar School and was a graduate of Lawrence High School, Class of 1939. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy Air Corp. and was honorably discharged. For 34 years, he was a lieutenant with the Lawrence Fire Department before retiring. He was the secretary treasurer of the Firefighters Association Retirees; a member of IAFF Local 146; and a member of the Reliefs Inn, the British Club and the Holy Name Society. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Mary R. (Mitchell) Murphy of Lawrence; three daughters, Rita A. Murphy of Salisbury, Kathleen M. Beattie and her husband, David, of Pelham, N.H., and Susan Murphy of Salisbury; one son, Edward J. Murphy Jr. of Lawrence; one sister, Ann M. Murphy of Highlands, Texas; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends may call on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Pollard Funeral Home Inc., 233 Lawrence St., Methuen. Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Lawrence. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery also in Lawrence. Memorials may be made to the Jimmy Fund/Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place, Brookline, MA 02445-9924.
